My name is Adebayo. Most people call me Bayo while some call me Baba Funke. In my native Yoruba culture, a parent is often referred to by the name of their first child, hence ‘Baba Funke’ literally translates to Funke’s dad.

I was born and bred in Lagos, Nigeria. Growing up surrounded by families across different generations, I was very much attuned to certain cultural values such as language, food and dressing. That appreciation of my root remains with me to this day. To that end, my previous business catered to promoting and preserving indigenous native African languages.

Today, I live in the UK which is in many ways a marked difference from the world I grew up in from a cultural perspective. Notwithstanding, as with every environment, it has its fascinating nuances, hence I’ve been drawn by the multicultural nature of my present environment and its impact on me as a dad.

Fatherhood is the best thing to ever happen to me! Its journey is an inspiration for me to create stories that speak to the intersection between my world and daughter’s. The Accent story is borne out of my experience of that intersection which is relatable for people living in new environments.

I love building things, hence when not writing a new story draft, I can be found writing computer programs professionally or personally. You can read more about me on https://daddycreates.com/about/

As a parent to children in a multi-cultural environment I found this story incredibly enlightening. I've never thought about explaining accents in the way this story does, so straightforward yet so effective. My daughters resonated with the story as their names are also often mispronounced and now they have a clearer understanding of why that is.

Adebayo has taken an easily trivialised topic and treated it with such humility and depth; the result is this incredibly enjoyable and heart-warming book. It's a beautiful story that children and parents alike would love - I and my toddler certainly did.

This book is a great resource to explain to children the reasons other children from different countries speak or pronounce words as they do. It would be an excellent story to read when a new student from another country enters the classroom or moves to a new neighborhood. The two characters are fun and vibrant and the storyline is realistic! I highly recommend this beautiful book.

Celebrating Diversity

It's a great book for children. It explains that coming from different backgrounds means we have different 'colourful' accents when we speak. This doesn't mean we cannot be friends, even if we struggle to understand the other person's accent. The book tells us to be patient with one another, and encourages us to ask for clarification in a friendly manner; without being offensive to the other person whose accent may be difficult to understand.

Quite interesting and topical a book. Written explicitly with the reader’s interest in mind. It’s very captivating and I enjoyed its contents, presentation and the graphics. I strongly recommend this book particularly to anyone who has got a child in that age group or is new to a different country from their origin. Also, to anyone who’s a broad reader, story teller and children’s teacher. I hope ‘The Accent’ gets the recognition it deserves!
